Lodmell Cellars

As the great-granddaughter of a four-generation wheat farming family, Kristie
Lodmell traded life in Biotechnology for a return to her roots.

In the late 1880s, Kristie’s great-grandfather, William Struthers, planted wheat on land by the lower Snake River, which is now the home to Lodmell Vineyards (the Lodmell Cellars wine label features a coiled snake). What started as a fifteen-acre plot of grapevines has now expanded to 30 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Semillon. These days, Kristie and her father, Miles Lodmell, work Lodmell Vineyards together.

The Lodmell family planted the Vineyard in 1997 and began selling fruit to award-winning winemakers, such as Woodward Canyon’s Rick Small, who, in return, introduced her brother Andrew to the art of winemaking. Andrew opened Lodmell Cellars in 2005 with a focus on Bourdeaux Style Estate wines, and his first commercial vintage was Merlot, Lodmell’s flagship (and award-winning) varietal.

Kristie was appointed General Manager and partner in 2008 and worked with Andrew until taking full ownership/winemaking responsibilities in 2016. Kristie returned to Walla Walla permanently 3 years ago.

She reveals that one of the best things about the wines is having complete control over the grapes. “Our wines are well received by both consumers and critics because the Estate fruit is consistent,” says Kristie. “The Vineyard was planted on virgin sage land, Ritzville sandy loam soil, fractured Basalt and with natural rainfall of less than 8” per year, augmented by irrigation allows us to control moisture.”
As a result, the plants form tight clusters and produce small, intensely flavorful berries.” Sublime, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere won a Double-Gold medal at the 2014 Seattle Wine Awards and received Platinum status by Wine Press Northwest.

Kristie says, “I’ve come full circle, from bench research to Corporate America, to Lodmell Cellars. I’m applying my scientific skills in the lab, creating and blending my final products and am proud to be part of the Washington Wine Industry.”

You can find the Lodmell Cellars tasting room inside the historic Marcus Whitman Hotel.
