Untitled

The last parading onion to sprout up, this sculpture by William Bow redefines art as accessible, hands-on, and interactive. It offers instructions to passers-by: pick up garbage, trade objects, deposit chewing gum to keep sidewalks clean...  "I wanted people to be a part of it," Bow says.  "It's for everybody, so it should be hands on so you can interact with it, play with it." This sculpture is located on the north side of Main St next to the Farmer's Market, between 3rd and 4th.

The Artist

William Bow

Will Bow is a student in the Walla Walla Community College Enology and Viticulture program.  Will grew up in many places, traveling with his military family.  He was struck by the strong sense of community in Walla Walla during a visit in college.  Now a resident, he says Walla Walla is the first place that has ever felt like home.

This onion makes a statement, but the message is left open to interpretation.  Because of its low height, Will designed his illustrations to appeal to children.  "As a kid, I remember you make interpretations of what you see, so things can take on meanings that aren't there."
